Product Description

Leg coverings are both supportive and protective. Using them properly is usually one of the telltale signs that separate the professional from the novice. It's not as easy as it looks. There are standing wraps, exercise and training bandages (polo wraps) cotton sheets and quilts. Then there's the problem of winding the bandages in the proper direction --- from the inside out, starting at the cannon bone. And applying just the right amount of tension. This book deals with all that and also explains the different kinds of boots --- tendon boots, splint boots, skid boots, galloping boots, shipping boots, jumping or shin books, therapy boots, and more. Types of leg ailments, caring for sore joints and using poultices and gels are just a few of the details the author has also not left up to chance. Plenty of black-and-white photographs illustrate what the text explains in greater detail. The book's author, Sue Allen, is a lifelong equestrian. While at Columbia University in New York City, Allen spent her weekends teaching hunt seat at show barns in Westchester and Dutchess counties. She eventually started a small riding school and trained and showed her own horses until 1993. She has been teaching riding and giving horse leg care clinics for more than ten years. This book grew out of that experience. (T.B.)
