Blessed Are The Brood Mares by Phyllis Lose

Product Description
When this book was first published in 1978, no other single source existed that contained such a wide range of medical information on the topic of caring for the brood mare and her foal. Now in its second edition, it has been thoroughly revised and updated by its author, M. Phyllis Lose, VMD, to reflect the newest developments in equine medicine. More than 75 black-and-white photographs and illustrations are in this new edition. A long-time equine veterinarian Dr. Lose writes in a style that is friendly and informative. By using case stories from her years of experience treating brood mares and their foals, she speaks with authority and compassion about the welfare of her charges. Her writing strikes a nice balance between being an important reference for the professional breeder but also conversational in tone and language to be understandable to the first-time breeder. However, the topic of barren brood mares could have taken a less commercial approach and focussed more on valuing these mares for reasons other than reproductive. Dr. Lose blames their barren condition largely on irresponsible breeding practices, which is good. But she neglects to advise first-time and professional breeders to slow down in their pursuit of monetary rewards and consider the option of retirement or another equine career for these deserving mares. Dr. Lose specializes in equine pediatrics and has been practicing for more than 30 years. She is also the author of "Blessed are the Foals," and "Keep Your Horse Healthy." (T.B.)
